He went there hoping to swim, but an injury cut short his career.īefore we tell you the story of how two gay swimmers helped each other come out, we want to share some background about each of us. June is LGBT Pride Month and the community has embraced a multitude of flags symbolizing the various subgroups which make up the whole. I was attached emotionally to Sailor Moon, not because of its fancy transformation or colorful costumes, but because she was my only friend during those lonely teenage years. Not the manga, but the anwswer I was looking for. The highlight of the day for the friendless low self-esteem 14-years-old me is to go back home after school hours and dive my nose in my Sailor Moon manga. They instantly brought me back to my middle school years, when I was a chubby teen who was horrible at sport, not popular among classmates, who occasionnaly got bullied, and who had a lot of trouble getting friends. I re-re-re-watched Sailor Moon (90s anime and Sailor Moon Crystal) and re-re-re-read the manga recently. So what is it? Why I’m so fascinated by this character. I met plenty of gay men who are not into Sailor Moon at all, for example, my boyfriend. Some might say it’s a gay thing, which I don’t fully agree.
